As to
myself, I never imagine that I will be one of the candidates to this kind of
complication. My first complication was UTI, and now GDM. All I know was, I have
a healthy life style before I was not pregnant. I used to limit drinking soft
drinks and tetra-packed juice, eating cake and ice cream. Even when I got
pregnant, no soft drinks and sugary foods at all, then later, I found out that
I have GDM. Anyway, according to my research and my medical books, you may have
GDM if you have,
- · family history of Diabetes
- · obesity or over weight
- · if you got pregnant by 25 years and up
GDM is a
glucose intolerance which results in elevated level of blood sugar. The pancreas
is the main organ that is responsible in balancing the hormones in our body. Primary
hormones of pancreas are the insulin and the glucagon both regulates blood
glucose. If your insulin is not balance you may be susceptible in acquiring
serious complications, Diabetes.

The most
common form of Diabetes are the following:
· Type 1 diabetes: If you have type 1
diabetes, then your body doesn’t produce any insulin to handle the glucose in
your body. Insulin deficiency causes a range of complications,
so people with type 1 diabetes have to take insulin to help their body use
glucose appropriately.
·
Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is much more prevalent than type
1. People with type 2 diabetes may be able to produce insulin, but their bodies
don’t use it correctly. They might also be unable to produce enough insulin to
handle the glucose in their body.
If you’re pregnant, you are highly susceptible in acquiring the type 2 Diabetes. It is best to check your sugar level after your pregnancy to ensure you do not acquire it.
If the test result is
positive in type 2 Diabetes, then your lifestyle must be changed. Eating
balance diet and proper exercise is the best key in combating Diabetes. Or otherwise,
you will end up in type 1 Diabetes wherein you will take insulin all throughout
your life. (It depends on the test result if you got a type 1 or type 2 Diabetes)
In my case, I was not able to check my glucose level after
my pregnancy, as everybody knows I got pregnant again. Well, as for my
pregnancy now, my doctor advised me to check again my glucose (oral glucose
challenge test) since I’m now in my 23 weeks of pregnancy. I think, I know the result
already.
It’s important to take this test; the baby in your womb will
be the one to suffer if not being treated (GDM). Of course, you don’t want to
happen this in your baby.
Always remember, healthy first!
